Nicole + Kevin's Wedding - South Bonson Hall

On one of the sunniest (and warmest) summer days Nicole & Kevin finally exchanged vows and celebrated with over 150 close friends and families at a beautiful venue in Osprey Village. Nicole is a loving mother whose focus for over 18 years has been on her daughter and her two young sons. For the first time in a long time she was able to focus on her dreams and she planned many personalized, DIY touches to bring her wedding vision to life. We had the pleasure of being there for N+K leading up to their wedding and on their special day as their day-of coordinator.

We debated for a while about getting a wedding planner. We finally decided to look into hiring a day of coordinator, as I had already had my wedding day all planned out. However, I knew I would need the help to put it all together on the day of the wedding and week leading up. I found Hasti online after I was referred to La Vista Events by our DJ. After our initial consult on the phone, I knew she was the one (pun intended). She was personable, funny, creative, and extremely knowledgeable. I felt very comfortable with her within the first 5 minutes of meeting her finally in person. We had decided on her being our week-of wedding coordinator, but ANY questions or concerns I had along the way, she was there to help me get the answers I needed. Finally our day was a week away and Hasti had become my right hand. Following our 5 hour "get Nicole in check" session, I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders. Because of Hasti and her team (Kayla and Sasha) we had a perfect day. Not a care in the world, just completely enjoyed each other and our guests. There was a lot going on behind the scenes but we had NO clue. We remained on schedule and were able to do everything we wanted to do. I do not regret, for even a second, spending what we did to have her as part of our day. Best investment we could have ever made for our wedding!

Tanya & Tim's Wedding - UBC Alumni Centre

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of helping Tanya & Tim plan their special day. This couple had initially hired us for day-of coordination, but after a last-minute unexpected venue change they asked us to step in and help them bring their original vision to life. In less than six weeks, we helped the couple re-plan certain aspects of their wedding and design some new elements, too! Their wedding was pretty in pink perfection!

PS. we were the very first wedding to take place at the brand new UBC Alumni Centre... how cool is that?

Where do I even begin, Hasti has played such a huge role in the seamless planning of our wedding, when we had an unexpected venue change, Hasti stepped right in to help out, even though we had initially only hired her for day-of coordination. After that, we knew that it would be much more valuable having her during the final month as well to help in the re-planning of our wedding. Keeping our budget in mind, she presented several ideas for various design and décor elements. She sourced the necessary vendors we needed and coordinated everything seamlessly – always keeping us in the loop when needed and filtering the many emails and meetings she had without us. My husband and I both work demanding full-time jobs so it was such a relief having an extra hand during the planning process.

For the longest time, we didn’t even know how many other couples Hasti and her team had on the go. During the planning process, she made us feel like we were her only client as she gave us the attention we needed to feel as relaxed as possible.

On the day of our wedding, Hasti and her team were there to attend to not only my needs, but also there to support our parents and wedding party with any special requests. They worked the day with smiling faces and much patience from start to finish. I was beyond happy with their service, I literally could not have pulled off such a fabulous day without them. I still have friends and family asking who my wedding planner was because they were so impressed with the work Hasti and her team did.

How do you define success?

When I wrote out my business plans for 2015, one of my goals was to take the time to read one book (any book, on any topic) each month. I didn't exactly hit my goal but I’m okay with that. January was a busy month with new client consultations, venue meetings, and other priorities that took precedent. I found myself working long (but enjoyable) hours each day and having only rare opportunities to sit down to relax and read.

My January book was Sophia Amoruso’s #GIRLBOSS, a gift from my husband from back in December. I would read a few pages here and there, but get distracted with ideas, emails, and appointments. But finally during some downtime during one of my flights, when I had no internet access and my pre-vacation to-do list was complete, I finally did it! I am proud that I took the time to actually enjoy the book instead of flipping through the pages to meet my goal. I didn’t fast-forward, flip-forward, or refer to the online book abstracts… I read every single page. #GIRLBOSS offered punches of personality paired with motivational quotes and raw advice – the perfect book to start off 2015 feeling inspired to do better and be better. Power-woman Sophia, Founder & former CEO of Nasty Gal (relax – it’s an online clothing store!), outlined the value of hard work, persistence, and the road to success in her book.

As I delved further into each chapter, I appreciated Sophia’s personable comments more and more, finding myself relating to and appreciating her honesty. So I decided to write this post because reading the #GIRLBOSS made me think about what success means to me.

For me, success isn’t about being the "best"... it’s about trying my best and enjoying the journey... and the rest will come naturally. I have the pleasure of working in a beautiful industry, where I wake up every day feeling energized because I get to do what I love. I am my own boss (how cool is that!) and it’s up to me how hard I want to work. I set high expectations for myself because I know I can achieve them. After all, there is nothing more powerful than taking control of your life and following your dreams. There are so many talented individuals in the wedding and event planning industry – so for me, it’s not about competition as much as it’s about collaboration. During the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with many talented individuals and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they’re just as passionate about their work as I am. It’s refreshing to meet with other motivated, like-minded individuals that I’ll be collaborating with more and more closely throughout this year and for years to come.

Let’s do great things and continue to have a big heart. Be kind to one another… and don’t forget to have some fun along the way!

Why I said goodbye to my full-time job…

When was the last time you followed your dreams?

I've always been one to play it safe. I went to a great business school, landed an internship, turned that internship into a career, got engaged, and married my best friend.

During the past few years, I was focused on building my career while working at an international company in the head office in beautiful downtown Vancouver. I was supporting a large HR team in various roles and working hard to grow both personally and professionally in order to keep moving up in the company. I thought that was my calling – but over time, I realized I didn't love what I was doing. I loved where I was working and I had a lot of positive feedback from colleagues and managers, but something was missing…

It was when I started planning my own wedding that I realized all my strengths were coming together. Organizing, designing, and perfecting – some of my favorite things! And then something clicked:

For the first time in my life, being a perfectionist didn't need to be a weakness.

Instead, I started to view it as an opportunity to pursue my passion. I've always been a planner. My friends from high school remember me planning school dances, special events, and fundraisers. And my university friends will recall my involvement with the Business Administration Student Society, where I was able to raise almost $50,000 in various sponsorship funds during a one-year term. I was also the Event Chair for the Snowball Formal, leading an organizing committee of eight peers who threw a sold-out gala for 250 guests.

Despite my experiences, I knew I needed to be smart about making this transition towards self-employment and take my time if I wanted to successfully grow La Vista Events. So after returning from my honeymoon, I starting investing more energy into my business. I was still working full-time at my HR job, but I was eager to come home each day to work on La Vista Events during evenings and weekends – and I was loving every moment. In the span of two months, I helped coordinate four weddings and planned one engagement party. I worked closely with each couple to understand their vision and turn it into reality.

My favorite part of helping my couples? Letting them enjoy the journey and experience a stress-free day.

As I started developing my experience planning weddings, I decided to take my education one step further. I obtained my Wedding Planning Certification thanks to the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada. I had an amazing instructor (shout out to Monica Ceasar!) and I passed the course with flying colors. I learned a lot of great tips and started building a network with fellow wedding & event planners.

I get such an incredible rush from the planning preparations to the day-of organization – it’s hard to describe but it’s really a special feeling and it gives me butterflies!

I’m very fortunate to have a supporting husband, family, and kind network of friends. I appreciate all the love, support, and advice from each and every one of you.

I’m also very lucky that although I said goodbye to my full-time job, I'll be transferring to a new department in a part-time role that will allow me more time to grow La Vista Events, meet with clients, and prepare for the adventures ahead in 2015.

Isn't it amazing how with time and hard work, things slowly start to fall into place and work out…?
